If anyone manages to rewrite the gconf-schemas and update-gconf-defaults
scripts in perl, *and* if I can decently understand and maintain these
scripts, I will be happy to replace the current scripts with the
provided ones. Currently, these scripts allow us to make all
GConf-related packages comply with the FHS and to ease their
maintainability. There is no way that we can remove this functionality.

Python is one of the supported languages for the GNOME platform. It is
expected that a typical GNOME installation requires python anyway.

Of course, trying to save dependencies is a good thing, but not at the
price of maintainability.
