Unless I'm mistaken, noone from the X team has commented on Christopher's patches. As someone who just lost a couple of minutes figuring out that it was gdm and xserverrc forcing DPI's over my carefully-crafted DisplaySize line (and much more reading through this thread), I find this idea better than just letting people finding their way through all of this.
