Upps... i see i edited the conf file by hand... and that setting is managed by debconf... is there a default debian policy saying how to deal with that? shouldn't debconf check the file's checksum and warn the admin before resetting the parameters? At least in small config files (say, less than ~20 lines) one can rely on a big warning on top "do not modify this file by hand, use dpkg-reconfigure" But for big files like wwwoffle's ... one can easily oversee such a warning!
