Ok, I've forgoten that I have a SATA hard drive in the machine I was testing it. :) The problem seems to be that it tries to open /dev/hda even if it's in use. I tested it in a machine with IDE drives and I got the same failure. Applying the patch provided in this bug report successfully detected my cdrw (output attached).
