I just tested for this bug myself, and my installation does not behave
in the manner you reported. I'm still running XFree86 4.3.0.dfsg.1-1.
I've seen other bugs related to the version of XFree86/Xorg being
used. Perhaps this is similar. If it is, you might try scanning the
upstream bug tracking system for your issue.

It works OK now. I do not know why, but I updated some libraries
yesterday, so that could be the reason...
When I click on the swarm tab, the content of the tab redraws
itself slightly after the tab is selected, resulting in a fraction
of a second where there is just this default background color (it
is the only tab that behaves like that).
At least the swarm "comes back" now, so I am happy.
As you say, the problem is probably somewhere else.

'swarm' tab, the swarm shows up for a fraction of a second and then
disappears, the whole tab being just the blank gnome background color
