Uhgh, nope.  I ran both the update-fonts-dir and xset commands, but
display still complains about helvetica.

It looks like /usr/share/fonts/X11/Type1 isn't in my font path:
$ xset -fp /usr/share/fonts/X11/Type1
xset:  warning, no entries deleted from font path.
