I'm sorry, but this is not an adequare resolution for this bug for a package in main. The package is disfunctional out of the box and can only work by getting external files of doubtful copyright either manually or via an installer script. While this might be acceptable for a package in contrib (if the files can be downloaded legally in some circumstances), it is not as long as this package is in main. Also, I think you should really research the copyright situation a bit better, in order to provide users of this package with adequate advice in the README what the concerns are with the support files, currently there's a bit of handwaving and the user is left on his own on this matter. While it's the user who is downloading the support files, I think Debian should only offer that option if that can be done legally in at least some circumstances.
