Folks,
This appears to be the closest bug to the issues we are
experiencing in the current bugzilla, so I'm sending my
feedback here.
I am posting hoping for some feedback WRT stability
of the current Firefox/Mozilla codebase. We are running
a web-based application on two workstations using either
Mozilla or Firefox and experiencing repeated crashes.
We see anywhere from 3 to 10 crashes a day. The app is
not doing a lot of _javascript_; several of the displays
do self-updates from once a second to about 30 seconds.
The self-updating displays are either simple HTML table
displays or displays that contain a single dynamically
generated GIF or PNG image (a chart). After lining up
about 10-15 of these windows, the system will run for a
while, then crash completely, requiring the entire multi-
window workspace to be set up again. What we're trying
to determine is whether there are known stability issues
in the current codebase that are being worked on, or the
developers are unaware of these problems.
First, a quick rundown on the workstation setups:
Workstation 1:
O/S: Debian Etch i386 (NOT x86_64)
CPU: Dual-Core Athlon 64
VIDEO: Quad-Head nVidia Quadro NVS 440 PCIe x16
4x Benq FP93G monitors
Latest nVidia binary driver
RAM: 4 GB
DISK: 36 GB 10k SATA
Xorg 6.9
GNOME Desktop
Firefox Version: 1.5.dfsg+1.5.0.3-2
Mozilla Version: 1.7.12-1.1
Workstation 2:
O/S: Debian Etch i386
CPU: 1.33 GHz Athlon
VIDEO: Dual-head Matrox G450 w/32MB RAM
2x Benq FP93G monitors
Matrox binary drivers
RAM: 1 GB
DISK: 20 GB ATA 7200 RPM
Xorg 6.9
GNOME Desktop
Firefox Version: 1.5.dfsg+1.5.0.3-2
Mozilla Version: 1.7.12-1.1
The Etch install on both machines is current as of last
weekend. The crashing behavior is seen on both workstations.
Are there known issues with these versions of Firefox and
Mozilla? Many of the displays are generating HTML which must
be rendered in quirks mode; will this decrease stability? Is
there any specific development group that works specifically
on dealing with stability issues in Mozilla/Firefox rather
than adding features?
We really need to start figuring out these issues and
doing whatever can be done to stabilize our situation; but
the incredible number of mailing lists/newsgroups/boards etc.
makes it very difficult to figure out where we should be
directing our questions. Any pointers on where we can go to
get answers on this would be greatly appreciated. Also, if
there is additional information about our hard/software that
would be useful, I'll be happy to provide more details.
If there are any tips/tricks on how we can gather more info
for debugging purposes, I'd love to hear them. I can't find any
feedback in .xession-errors or under /var/log to indicate what
the heck is going on...
many thanks,
Jim
