Dear Daniel,

down here in the Debian bug tracking system we got a bug report [1], which points to a possible bug in french.ldf. I don't really have a minimal example for problem reproduction, except the code at the beginning of the report, which is far form being minimal.

More interesting is the statement below [2]:

<quote>
It seems that \FBCompactItemize@setup is called from line 1189 of
/usr/share/texlive/texmf-dist/tex/generic/babel-french/french.ldf
but this function is defined as \FB@CompactItemize@setup (with an extra @) at line 1281.

Removing the first @ at line 1281 seems to fix this bug.
Note that the same should also be done with \FB@ListOldLayout@setup at line 1274.
</quote>

Could you check and suggest a proper solution?

Thanks,
  Hilmar
