I had managed to successfully build a bootable image doing it "the old way" that worked on both pinebook (allwinner A64) and pinebook pro (rockchip rk3399) at "alternate offsets" that required no changes to the u-boot binaries... but that was with older versions. I would hate to break that ability, although it would be reasonable to test it sometime to make sure it still works!
