Package: gnucash
Version: 1.9.6-3
Severity: normal

I just started gnucash to do some routine accounting and was presented
with what appears to be the Gnome 2 version. Good work there, nice to
see a slicker interface to my financial software.

However, the upgrade procedure is less than could be hoped for. My
mother uses Gnucash for her accounting, and this update will leave her
utterly lost if it is released as is.  (not to pick on Mom in particular;
there are lots of users like her, but most of them don't use me as a
support line :-) )

  I see two main problems:

    (1) gnucash forgot its default file settings; i.,e., it did not
automatically open the accounts file that I last had open in
the Gnome 1 version. You might consider this a small thing,
but I guarantee I'll get a "support call" about this -- most
likely a frantic terrified one asking why her financial data
        has been "lost".

    (2) gnucash presented me with a window called
"GnuCash XML Import Druid", which Mom will consider either
gibberish or some sort of mistletoe-worshipping international
trade organisation :-). This window contained a lot of text
that is probably far more technical than it needs to be. Off
the top of my head, I suggest something like "data upgrade"
for the title and an explanation that old formats did not
properly handle some "international" characters, so you need
to tell the computer which option to pick, with the technical
details in the last paragraph if necessary. I may not be the
best person to design better text, though.

Maybe an even bigger problem with this dialog is that I
couldn't get out of it the first time I went through: I assigned
the single word it asked me to assign, and the Forward button
stayed insensitive (grayed out). I was able to guess that
hitting Backward, then Forward, would "magically" fix the
        problem.

This may be less of an issue than I first thought if it only
appears when non-8bit characters are present. I appear to
have gotten it by accounting for a purchase at Bon Marche
and cleverly inserting the accent on the "e".

  Daniel
