Here it doesn't export LANG/LANGUAGE either.

IIRC no, but I'm not sure, need to check later.

As I said, gdm had been purged some time ago and I have not reinstalled
it. So no, the init-script surely is not changed. I'll reinstall (with
purging and removing any stale configs) gdm later and see if anythin
changes.

BTW: The locale in the script, right after reading /etc/default/locale
is de_DE as set in /etc/default/locale.
