Sorry, I spoke too soon. The Hershey fonts are not included in any version of ghostscript (I just thought so, because of this Hershey.htm). They are in fact in the package gsfonts-other. I just did dpkg --purge gsfonts-other. This (of course) made the problem disappear. The Hershey fonts no longer appear in the Firefox font list. And other postscript fonts (like URW Palladio L) work fine with Firefox. But there was a complaint: Unregistering Postscript fonts...Use of uninitialized value in print at /var/lib/defoma/scripts/gs.defoma line 108.
