I couldn't reproduce this with 4.0b9 (packaging in progress), or 4.0b8
in 'testing'.  Could you check if that version fixes it, or if it is
present in the upstream binary?

It isn't clear to me what the XPA error message is all about.  The
reference manual seems to be encoded in the executable binary (ugh!).
Could you check if XPA works at all for you?  The following should
work without error:

  xpaget ds9
  xpaget -p ds9 about
  xpaget ds9 version

Could you also provide a backtrace of the crash (with debugging
symbols, if that looks to be useful)?

Could you test if this still exists with the more recent package
versions?
