I have installed linphone-desktop from the unstable distribution. As you say, very different! It has read the linphone_friend.db which is good. However there is something amiss with the redering of icons. Screenshot attached (I have cut out some contact details to protect privacy). Perhaps a missing dependency? I may report more when I have collected information.
