fmtutil: running `tex -ini -jobname=xmltex -progname=xmltex &latex xmltex.ini' ... This is TeX, Version 3.141592 (Web2C 7.5.4) (INITEX) ---! /tmp/fmtutil.21093/latex.fmt was written by pdfetex (Fatal format file error; I'm stymied) What is the output of dpkg -l xmltex ls /etc/texmf/fmt.d/ grep xmltex /etc/texmf/fmt.d/* I suspect that you refused to upgrade xmltex's configuration file (or that there's one more bug in xmltex's configuration file handling).
