Found the solution! Manually starting xdg-document-portal works; explained here https://github.com/flatpak/flatpak/issues/1359#issuecomment-455280209
systemctl start --user xdg-document-portal Checking the service status, I noticed it was not running on fresh login. The current workaround is to manually start it.
