One example is the bottom commented out part of upstream sample
configfile about more "usual" keybindings.

The use case I have in mind is debian-design, a Debian Pure Blend (i.e.
an "install profile") targeted non-technical users who will dislike the
default keybindings and will dislike needing to edit a configfile to
change keybindings.

Thanks, I will consider filing a bugreport upstream - but frankly I am
beginning to find it tiresome to try convince you about functionality
that seems alien to you but obvious to me. Not meant as a complaint, I
do appreciate your patience, just being honest about my own limited
patience.

Kind regards,
