i'm fairly certain i understand what the problem is; what i was
asking was whether providing an alternate script like the one
you suggest (and now mentioned on the runit web page) would be
a sufficient fix, or whether the wrapper scripts would have
to be modified.

knowing that mysql does voodoo internally with signals, i'd be
hesitant to change any of the pre-existing scripts without
extensive testing, which is why i probably seem pretty fixated
on not having to do that :)
