The mksquashfs from squashfs-tools 1:4.3-11 somehow can not make use all
CPU cores. I found this when making a Debian live Sid system on my
Stretch amd64 machine. Hence I have tried different versions of
squashfs-tools. For mksquashfs from squashfs-tools 1:4.3-11 , I ran it by:
time sudo mksquashfs squashfs-root filesystem.squashfs.new -b 1024k
-comp xz -Xbcj x86 -e boot -no-progress
  Is there any way I can generate that set of files / directory you are
using for mksquashfs?
Anyway, please try the upcoming squashfs-tools package release[1] and
report back to me. Indeed it is slower than -9 on my data, but only
around 20%.

Thanks in advance,

Hi László,
This issue still remains in 1:4.3-13. Anything I can help to improve this?
Or shall we gradually switch to squashfs-tools-ng is the upstream is more
active:
https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=931965
Thank you very much.

Steven
