this is indeed an error in the documentation.

The default mode is --mode=auto and as you observed fakechroot gets chosen
before proot. This is because fakechroot has a critical advantage over proot:
it is able to preserve ownership information while when using proot, everything
is owned by the root user.

I'll soon upload a patched version that fixes this issue.
