I'm setting this bug to important but it should be critical as
suspending is a major feature of gpm.

This bug might be forwarded to dbus.

When trying to suspend the laptop gpm complains:
[gpm_hal_suspend] gpm-hal.c:202 (10:40:57): A security policy in place
prevents this sender from sending this message to this recipient, see message
bus configuration file (rejected message had interface
"org.freedesktop.Hal.Device.SystemPowerManagement" member "Suspend" error name
"(unset)" destination "org.freedesktop.Hal")
*** WARNING ***
*** WARNING ***
[gpm_hal_suspend] gpm-hal.c:205 (10:40:57):
org.freedesktop.Hal.Device.SystemPowerManagement.Suspend failed (HAL error)

This seems to be due to security enforced dbus installation on Debian
(and ubuntu), and is reported in the FAQ:
http://www.gnome.org/projects/gnome-power-manager/faq.html#ubuntulibforeground
and in the upstream BTS:
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=330889

(What the hell are ubuntu specific bugs doing in upstream bts ??)

The solution deployed by Ubuntu is to use pam-foreground to give
rights to localy connected users to export methods on the Bus, but
this needs porting Ubuntu's dbus patches to Debian.

I don't know anything about pam, but doesn't the pam-foreground
package need some love ?
