I'm setting this bug to important but it should be critical as suspending is a major feature of gpm. This bug might be forwarded to dbus. The solution deployed by Ubuntu is to use pam-foreground to give rights to localy connected users to export methods on the Bus, but this needs porting Ubuntu's dbus patches to Debian.
