Update:

I've built a version of dbus with the ubuntu patch, it removes the
error message about auth for gpm, but it still complains:

[gpm_tray_icon_suspend_cb] gpm-tray-icon.c:207 (22:08:58): emitting
suspend
[gpm_manager_tray_icon_suspend] gpm-manager.c:1454 (22:08:58): Received
supend signal from tray icon
[manager_do_we_screensave] gpm-manager.c:509 (22:08:58): Using
ScreenSaver settings (1)
[gpm_screensaver_lock] gpm-screensaver.c:157 (22:08:58): lock
*** WARNING ***
[gpm_hal_suspend] gpm-hal.c:202 (22:08:58): An unknown error occured

[gpm_hal_suspend] gpm-hal.c:205 (22:08:58):

The FAQ might point to the fact that this might be a HAL issue ..
