Sorry, don't know why I've missed it...

But, now that I look at it, I don't understand. Isn't the whole point
of 'configure' that it work on any system, without requiring autotools?
I know from experience that the whole autotools stack is a complete
piece of crap, but this request seems to completely invalidate it's very
reason for existence.

Would removing config.guess and config.sub from the distribution solve
the problem?
