So, I have tagged this bug unreproducible and help. I can't solve it because I can't see it. If anyone can, please try putting strace -o /tmp/efix.log on the start of the line 792 of /usr/bin/fax, running it, and seeing whether anything interesting is in the produced logfile? If no-one else can, I suspect there's some problem (maybe CPU/memory) on the system showing the bug.
