Since we agree on GAP 4.10, let us concentrate on libgap.la. What do you need and how do you plan to proceed ? Do you need symbol mangling ? (by the way, your patch did not work: it only installed libgap.la but not the actual library.) GAP libgap.la does not do symbol mangling and does not have a fixed ABI, so maybe it is too soon to ship a dedicated package libgap.deb, but instead include it in gap-dev or gap-core.
