One addition, since the protocol change version is related to:
* syncmaildir.lua:
- automatic recover when interrupted just before
renaming *.db.new into *.db (was causing db-mismatch error)
Can you consider cherry-picking the changes needed to the stable
version, since this seems to fix a real bug which would affect the
version in stable as well, and did make necessary to change the
protocol version accordingly?
If I'm not completely wrong that would be

so updating via stretch-pu syncmaildir to have it fixed at next point
release time would be possible.
