mutt-mg builds with automake-1.(4|7|9), but you're right I have to
patch autogen.sh to make sure automake-1.7 is used.

How did you build the Debian package? It builds fine with 
apt-src build

No! It builds with db.h or without.

No need to. mutt-ng uses qdbm by default. Again, it builds with or
without any version of libdb-dev installed.

You can make your own test and build mutt-ng with pbuilder.
