Yeah, ISTR Niels warned against this.

FWIW, instead of going for a locally hacked version of a given package,
you can use snapshot.debian.org URL with a specific timestamp in your
sources.list, so that your tests no longer depend on archive changes.

See http://snapshot.debian.org/ for usage, and recent timestamps (e.g.
June) in http://snapshot.debian.org/archive/debian/?year=2017&month=6
