Upstream says that the problem is a Debian problem, and that the upgrade would fix it. Unfortunately, the upgrade has not made it to the Debian repositories. IMHO, the bug for Debian should remain open until the maintainers get it fixed in Debian, either by patching the existing software, or more probably by upgrading the software in the repositories appropriately. AFAIK, Stretch has not as of yet been frozen, so the maintainers have the flexibility to fix it by incorporating the newer version of caja (I believe the mate-desktop is already at 1.16.2 in the repository).
