Ok, so it's not an issue which is fixed in the daily build - I tried the 7 Feb netinst iso to no avail.
However, I did manage to run lilo successfully on the original partition (VG1-Root), after doing mount -o bind /proc /mnt/VG1-Root (and using mknod to hack the major numbers of the VG1 LVs in /mnt/VG1-Root/dev/mapper to 254, which is another story). So, I think perhaps this error is about using a root filesystem which is not the first one in the volume group - or rather, which is not confined to a single physical drive. If anyone can tell me the correct incantations I'll post the physical info for VG1-Root and VG1-NewRoot: I bet the former is entirely on hda and the latter spans both drives.
