This is more or less the question if there is any chance these get into
stretch at any point or if I'll have to try to get the fixed packages

Thanks for pinging us on this... Quite recently, various MATE components of the MATE 1.16 release series got updated and unblocked for Debian 9 migration. We are currently waiting for unblocks for components with bigger (caja, mate-desktop, mate-themes).
