As explained in this debian resource <https://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/debmake-doc/ch07.en.html#gbp>, *gbp buildpackage* is the modern way to build packages from git repositories (gbp= git-buildpackage). You will have to use it some day, sooner or later: why not try it now?
