This is obviously a security issue, so raising severity to serious.

Upstream issue #103[1] seems very similar to the description of this
bug, and is reportedly fixed with upstream PR #110. Moreover, it looks
like the first half of that PR was also included into the very recent
release 1.16.1, but unfortunately not the other half.

I just spoke to the developer who worked on PR #110 for mate-screensaver. He said that one of the two commits was for beautifications, the one that made it into 1.16.1 is the actual fix-up commit.

Saying this, is the issue now solved, since mate-screensaver 1.16.1-1 has landed in Debian stretch?
