 I can't reproduce it. Just did the following:
# chroot sid
# dpkg --purge fuse
dpkg: warning: ignoring request to remove fuse which isn't installed
root@julia:~# rm /etc/mtab
rm: cannot remove '/etc/mtab': No such file or directory
# apt-get install fuse
Setting up fuse (2.9.7-1) ...
