After adding the battery plugin to the panel, a space for it is

You should see a rectangle which is thinner than it is tall. Can you right click on the space and see the context menu for the plugin?
Do you have ACPI/APM working in your kernel?
Maybe a quick line in the docs folder to check apm/acpi in the kernel would be a good idea ;-)
Looking in .xsession-errors, the following error is logged when the
battery monitor tries to startup:
(xfce4-session:2911): Gtk-CRITICAL **: file gtkwidget.c: line 1911
(gtk_widget_destroy): assertion `GTK_IS_WIDGET (widget)' failed
Hmm, I'm not sure this is relevant. Does it only happen when you add it?
