I just confirmed the problem with a vfat thumb drive; I do not think the fs matters (mentioned only for completeness). I have tested several different drives.
Only once during testing, 1.6.10-3 appeared to start working correctly for all drives. This behaviour did not survive a reboot. Mounting with 1.6.10-2 is always successful.
