will be doing it, for the record it is as you suspected -

┌─[shirish@debian] - [~/.config/subtitleeditor/default] - [10332]
└─[$] cat config | grep gconfvideosink

video-sink=gconfvideosink

Update - Did that and now it seems to work

┌─[shirish@debian] - [~/.config/subtitleeditor/default] - [10344]
└─[$] cat config | grep video-sink

video-sink=autovideosink

Although now I get critical warnings but guess the crash issue is solved.

└─[$] subtitleeditor somesubtitle.srt

(subtitleeditor:31173): Gtk-WARNING **: Theme parsing error:
gtk.css:63:28: The :prelight pseudo-class is deprecated. Use :hover
instead.

(subtitleeditor:31173): Gtk-WARNING **: Theme parsing error:
gtk.css:73:35: The :prelight pseudo-class is deprecated. Use :hover
instead.
