This isn't the expected behaviour :) I've tried it here and it seems to
work with various values. All of /etc/aliases, /etc/aliases.db, and
/etc/mailname are supopsed to be updated.

Perhaps you could try adding a line containing only "set -x" above the
line "set -e" in /var/lib/dpkg/info/opensmtpd.postinst and
/var/lib/dpkg/info/opensmtpd.config and sending me the output of
running "dpkg-reconfigure -phigh opensmtpd" as root?

Note that the aforementioned files will not be automatically regenerated
if you delete them: you'll need to rerun debconf/dpkg-reconfigure to
regenerate them.
