Thanks for the patch!

In its current form it's not appropriate to forward upstream, I'd like to have a CMake option that disables the new version check, that should be acceptable for upstream. I'll have a look at that when time permits.

The fix for the FTBFS is included in QGIS 2.14.2, available in git and NEW.

As long as we can't fix the outstanding RC bug by switching to Qt5,
there will be no qgis in stretch.

While I'd like to stick to 2.14.x LTR for stretch, the Qt5 support will only be officially supported in QGIS 2.16.

The current plan is to switch to Qt5 for QGIS 2.16 and include that in stretch. The subsequent 3.x LTR will be made available via backports.
