This is probably not even Cantarell's fault. Upstream suggests to disable the stem darkening feature in FreeType, at least as long as it is not properly implemented in the actual rendering libraries further up the stack (which are expected/required to apply gamma correction for this feature but currently don't): https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=724190#c11 So, maybe we should turn this into a wishlist bug for src:freetype?
