Same with - clean source - build with curretn upstream TeX Live - rebuilt with sid again it works. This is *VERY* strange. BTW, there is a much bigger problem, namely that the fonts are *completely* hosed have you checked that? The output is broken, badly broken for type1 fonts. <rant> My guess is again that the gsfonts and TeX fonts are playing wild here. It is a PITA - and I really have to repeat this a tousand times, that some st*&^*&%&^$&^$%&*%^* added glyphs to the URW Base 35 fonts (cyrillic), and then thought it is a good idea to distribute tha tin Debian with *THE*SAME* f******* name of the fonts. </rant> Anyway, I will investigate, maybe it is just a temporary incompatibility between fontspec and latex3. I will try to package up the latest TL checkout and see if that fixes the problem. What remains is the font problem, which I don't see that we can solve due to gsfonts being quasi necessary.
