Don't you need the NIS server to be started in order to use apcaccess on the
local machine?  If it's not necessary, is it turned off by default?

I agree with you that the package is not a security risk right after
installation since it's disabled. 

 The only thing I'd like to suggest is that the default settings be aimed at
the person with the simplest possible setup since this kind of user is
unlikely to spend a lot of time configuring the daemon. Users needing the
remote administration/querying are most likely, I believe, to spend some
time looking at all the options.

I leave it up to your judgement to decide whether or not you want to make it
easier for one kind of users or not.  It's not a big deal and I'm sure you
have good reasons if you prefer not to change this.

On a related note, would it be a good idea to make the default settings use
USB ports?  (It looks like almost all new models from APC come with a USB
cable.)
