Just as a reminder:

Jessie now is stable and the problem still is there:

I upgraded from wheezy and removed many obsolete packages, including
python-evolution.

Gbirthday complains (via popup message near GNOME3's notification area)
that python-evolution is missing and demands to install it in order to
use gbirthday with evolution. (This is what I did before with wheezy.)
So IMO it's no longer a simple suggests vs. recommends question but it's
a bug: The program asks something to be done that is not possible.

Even more: for my usecase gbirhday has become useless and I will
uninstall it. But there might be more (and better working) usecases.

To avoid this problem you should entirely disable the selection of
evolution as database-source.
