I am reasonably sure. I will try zapping my config at work on monday (I observed it there) and redoing it from scratch. All secondary identities send to the globally defined default SMTP server instead of the SMTP server defined for the primary identity for the account. They are initialized to this in prefs.js and there are no means of changing this. You can change the SMTP setting for an _account_via the GUI , but not for an identity on the account (though they are nearly identically described in prefs.js). SMTP is not available as a choice in [manage identities/edit] If you change an account all of its identities remain initialized to the default server, not the one you changed the "umbrella" account to.
