I agree. Cost isn't really an issue as our traffic profile is predominantly egress. It just made more sense to sync from something which is more local to where we are located.
Just as a FYI, the vast majority of Internet "activity" happens within Sydney, as almost all of the international links terminate local to Sydney.
The mirror owner of the IP behind ftp.au.debian.org is a company called IX-Australia (formally known as WAIX [Western Australia Internet Exchange]).
They recently expanded over to the east cost (Sydney/Melbourne/Queensland), so I'll ping them and see if they have future plans with the server (we actually are provisioning a 10Gig peering port with them at the moment too).
