Maybe you already looked, but is there anything else that seems relevant
in the *Messages* buffer?

Also, if you're inclined, #emacs or emacs-devel might be helpful; I'll
try to delve a bit more when I get a chance, but if that doesn't reveal
anything, I'll probably be headed there myself.

Oh, and just crossed my mind -- do you happen to have the gnus deb
installed?  If so, I wonder if that might be relevant (though it may not
be active for emacs24).
