* ‘M-x set-variable RET debug-on-error RET t RET’

* ‘M-x gnus RET’

* In the absence of my startup configuration, Gnus additionally
  complains about being unable to open the default news service. But
  that doesn't affect the eventual failure.

* With or without my startup configuration, Gnus then prompts
  “Gnus auto-save file exists.  Do you want to read it? (y or n)”.

* ‘y RET’; Gnus begins to report its progress reading the save file.

* The Gnus startup exits, with the error
  “Cannot open load file: no such file or directory, debug”.
