As Jim noticed the problem is with the GTK+ CSS.

In particular xombrero.css has been written on the basis of the (old)
default GTK+ theme Raleigh. This is why this same bug has been already
reported few months ago by people using few specific different themes
not compatible with this CSS.

Now the problem is a little bit more serious because the default GTK+
theme as been changed to Adwaita[0] so in debian as soon as libgtk-3-0
is upgraded to 3.14.1-1 the bug occurs also in configurations without a
DE.

A temporary workaround can be to remove xombrero.css (works for me)
losing the useful coloring (red/yellow/etc.) and the compact style.
Another option is deleting just few lines, the ones containing:
- "@text_color" to fix the text color in the URI and search fields, in
the status bar and in command_mode,
- "@selected_bg_color" to fix the color of the selected text,
- "@selected_fg_color" to fix the color in foreground on the
  progressbar in the URI field,
or modify them in accord to the particular theme in use.

The solution would be a modern rewrite of xombrero.css.
