Hello, the wheezy-backport works for me and has been so for the past months. Probably there is some configuration issue on your side that prevents the connection of your freeciv client to the local server. Please backup your configuration in $HOME (.freeciv directory and hidden .freeciv* files), move them away and restart the game.
